Phoneme是語言中的音韻單位(phonological units of language),但是在不同環境下可
能有不同發音,phoneme中的不同發音就稱為allophone。 (可參閱Language Files 11 -
P.111 Table 5)
Phoneme不是實際上生理發出的聲音,它們是抽象的音韻單位上的代表(abstract mental
unit), allophone則是真實生理產生的聲音。
例如:plural form /z/ 有可能有 [z]/[s]/[əz]的變化
╱ [z] / consonants, vowels [+voiced] +______
/z/----[s] / consonants [-voiced] +______
╲ [əz] / consonants [+sibilant] +______
( /z/ phoneme, [z]/[s]/[əz] allophone )
所以
allophone environment
[z] after [d], [b], [g], [v] etc. (voiced consonants or vowels)
[s] after [p], [t], [k], [f] etc. (voiceless consonants)
[əz] after [s] [z], [ʃ], [ʒ], [tʃ], [dʒ] etc. (sibilants )
Phoneme的特性: 1. 對比分布(contrastive distribution)[在一模一樣的語音環境下,
但是發音不同]~故此,無法依環境來預測。
Allophone的特性: 1. 發音相似 2.互補分配(complementary distribution)[在不同的語
音環境,有特定的發音]~故此,可依環境來預測。
