My kids love any opportunity they get to come up close with animals and nature. During our stay in Bintan last week, we booked a last minute excursion to Safari Lagoi and were the only family to do so - which means we had our personal chauffeur. Woohoo!

The place is quite new, having opened only three years ago. Since our 3.5-hour trip was inclusive of a dinner at a kelong seafood restaurant, the hubby and I thought: The safari must be very small lar, can tour finish in a short time.

It turned out that we spent hours there and were almost late in getting our dinner before catching the ferry back home, but it was all worthwhile. The kids got to shake hands with chimpanzees, watch a snake devour a dead mouse, feed grass to deer, cuddle with cute rabbits, admire the elephants (there were seven!), be intimated by sun bears who stood up on their feet and growled at onlookers, carry a giant turtle, plucked jambu and feed them to cockatoos, come up close with crocodiles, pythons, cassowaries and even a komodo dragon. We heard from our guide that there will even be a tiger and camel here in the future.

Were we impressed? Definitely. It was more than what we had bargained for and I was so glad we visited this place together just before the holiday ended. The 5min boat ride across the mangrove swamp to the seafood restaurant, which served us our yummy dinner promptly, was the icing on the cake and a perfect way to end off a perfect day.

Oh, and what did we do in the morning? It was sports day for us in Club Med. The girls did their trapeze and we then decided to head to the sports centre ourselves where we played archery, squash, badminton, basketball and football for the whole morning and afternoon. Yeah, energy seldom runs low here. Haha. But, I was amazed we survived the long day and made it through the late night bumpy ferry ride.

To more holidays ahead of us where we create loving memories to last a lifetime. It doesn't matter so much where we go, but who we are with.

On her first cable skiing experience at the age of nine.

Yup, that's my girl, one who is iron-willed, adventurous and strong-minded. She was the one who wanted to try this upon knowing she could and even before we checked into our tent, she was eagerly waiting for that big moment to arrive.

To be honest, I haven't tried this before but I can see how much effort, strength and determination it takes, how easy it is to lose your balance and fall, how hard it can be to get back up on your feet. The hubby and I were afraid she might panic and struggle after a fall while taking in water and trying to steer herself in the right direction at the same time.

But, she did it time and again during that half an hour session and only got better and better with each fall. She never gave up and amazed me by how she persevered to the end. The instructor said she did well for a first-timer, and I couldn't agree more.

Yup, I guess it's a reminder for us as parents to learn to let go, to allow our little ones to take risks, to give them the chance to fail and learn to get back up on their feet. It's not that we don't need to help them, but instead of lending them a hand, perhaps a better way is to cheer for them from the sideline and hope the best for them in our hearts. That is how we let them build up the one important thing that will tide them over when the going gets tough in life - I think they call it grit.

You go, girl! Mama is proud just watching you ride the waves!

3) The look on your face when your mum lifts up the baby brother and brings him to the other sister so you can ride solo

In any case, it was a very fun session that lasted nearly half an hour as the kids rode a huge round around the lagoon (and I followed them all the way and was panting after). They will definitely love to do this again!
