If you were to pour eight ounces of your favorite beverage into a 16-ounce glass, you may say the glass is half full if you’re an optimist, or half empty if you’re a pessimist. 1⃣So the phrases “glass half full” and “glass half empty” are used to describe optimists and pessimists, respectively. Ex: Robbie is a glass half full kind of guy.
當你把愛喝的飲料8盎司倒進16盎司的玻璃杯中，你或許會說，這杯子有半分滿，如果你夠樂觀的話。而你若是悲觀的人，你就會說杯子有半分空。所以，片語 glass half full 跟 glass half empty 就是分別形容樂觀跟悲觀的人：Robbie is a glass half full kind of guy.（羅比算是個樂天派。）
When people make a toast, they often raise their glass, or tell everybody else to, 2⃣so “raise a glass” (or “raise one’s glass) means to make a toast. Ex: Let’s all raise a glass to the bride and groom!
慶祝時，人們通常會舉起自己的玻璃杯，或是請全部人一起舉杯慶祝，所以 raise a/one’s glass 延伸有「舉杯慶祝」之意：Let’s all raise a glass to the bride and groom!（讓我們舉杯祝福這對新人！）
And what if the bride (or groom) is tall and good-looking? You could call them 3⃣“a tall glass of water.” Ex: Have you seen the new sales manager? He’s a tall glass of water!
要是新人湊巧長得又高又好看，你就可以說他們 a tall glass of water「高帥美」：Have you seen the new sales manager? He’s a tall glass of water!（你有看到那位新來的業務經理嗎？他又高又帥！）
