Can we eat them raw?
Even kindergarteners know that cooked foods are safe to eat. As we grow older and are exposed to new knowledge, we realize there are some foods that can actually be eaten raw!
Do you enjoy eating the following foods raw or cooked?
🌽 White corn
There are many ways to cook white corn, but the Hokkaido white corn, known to be the sweetest corn in the world, can be eaten raw.
🐟 Fish
Sashimi is a classic dish in Japanese cuisine. We can slice fresh raw fish and shellfish and eat them with wasabi and soy sauce. Many people enjoy sashimi, but do beware of the parasites that might enter the body if we consume them excessively.
🥚 Egg
Japanese enjoy mixing raw eggs into their rice, but not all eggs can be eaten raw. Eggs that are produced in Japan can be eaten raw within the first 21 days. Do watch out for the expiry date for raw consumption on the packaging.
🐮 Beef/chicken
Steak tartare is a classic French dish, and it is made of mixed minced raw beef, spices, and raw eggs. Besides steak tartare, there is also chicken tartare. In some Japanese restaurants, they serve chicken sashimi too. Would you be willing to give that a shot?
🦀 Crab
Soy sauce marinated crab is famous in Korean cuisine, and the crabs used in the dish are uncooked. Likewise, in Jiangsu and Shanghai, there are also people who marinate raw crabs with wine. Do note that eating raw crabs can increase the risks of getting the Paragonimus infection (lung infection caused by parasites called paragonimus) and cholera.
🐙 Live octopus
In traditional Korean cuisine, raw octopus is served. While diners would consume live octopuses as they are, the mollusks’ arms might cling onto the mouth, tongue, and even esophagus, suffocating the diners.
The Chinese Medicine theories believe that eating raw and cold food is not good for the wellbeing of the body. ‘Raw’ refers to uncooked foods, whereas ‘cold’ refers to foods that are below room temperature. Eating raw and cold foods can damage the yang energy, the spleen, and the stomach, and it would cause the body to accumulate phlegm and dampness.
Uncooked foods may also become a growing site for bacteria and parasites. Seasonings like vinegar, wine, garlic, and chili are not effective in wiping out the bacteria and parasites. Some might experience a mild indigestion after consuming uncooked foods, but in more severe cases, individuals might experience food poisoning. Hence, we need to be more cautious.

do you eat sashimi with rice
Whenever I go to Tainan and tell my friends they are jealous, In a good way. If Taiwan is a cake, then Tainan is definitely the cherry on top. And sorry, I won’t mention all the beautiful places to visit here. Also - I will skip the fabulous historical part. I will go straight to the point - FOOD!
Recently, I was invited by the Bureau of Economic Development, Tainan City Government and NCKU Research and Development Foundation to a 3-day trip, and visited 20 shops. You can always count on the kindness and hospitality of the Tainan people. But don't worry, If I was invited, my camera was invited too, and that means I did my best to show off those places, and now I will pay back those nice people, and I am going to invite you on the trip too; are you ready?
PART 01 - When in Tainan, eat as the Tainanese do! - A guide to flavorful, popular (and English speaking) places serving Tainan food!
Taiwanese food is just extraordinary. Everybody loves it. No doubt about it. But now, you need to know that Tainan is the oldest city in Taiwan and because of that - the variety of foods is richer here than anywhere else. So I will introduce a few places around Tainan where you can get local food. So take your chopsticks in the hand and let’s commence our mouth-watering journey around Tainan!
(Zi long dian ya)
As a person born and raised in Europe, I am not really used to eating ducks the way they are usually served in Taiwan. I don't really like messing with bones. But here was a great surprise! They prepare meals removing bones. They sell duck with dried noodles or rice, and also have plenty of side dishes, too. The most special one is duck feet with cucumber, which is really good. Another thing is - the restaurant is located in a typical Tainan style neighbourhood near the old street, so after the tasty dishes you can stroll around there for a while.
(Mo mo cha)
It’s a chic tea house waiting for you in one of the narrow streets downtown in Tainan (walking distance from the train station). The owner showed and let me make my own matcha from dry tea leaves. Usually tea shops are supplied by whole suppliers (importing tea in bulk). However, this is not the case here - the owner’s family has run a tea plantation for 3 generations; you can taste and say - the tea flows through his veins! They serve a whole variety of delicious teas from Taiwan, for instance: high mountain green tea, oolong tea, tea with fruit juice, milk tea, and more.
The place has stunning interiors that are simple, but you can feel a Taiwanese coziness inside. Momocha is a great place to sit and relax, read a book. Just enjoy your gourmet teas and let time stop for a while.
Apart from the teas and drink you can also find here food, such as Gua Bao. If you speak a bit of Chinese you will know that Han Bao (漢堡) is a word for hamburger. Basically, it's a burger but instead of bread they use a steamed bun. If you are in Tainan it's a must try. :)
(Hé jì nèn gú fàn)
This is one very special Chinese restaurant. This place is particularly famous in Tainan because it’s already become a chain. Actually, the dishes are very simple - such as rice and meat, but…. the devil is in the details, and in this case it’s the special way they prepare their meats. Of course, that's the chef's secret, but they're delicious. The flag dish is braised pork with soft bones. And indeed the bones are so soft that you can easily eat them! Apart from that you can find other dishes, such as Braised Pork Noodles.
Sānchuán de mán jǐng)
100 stir-fried Taiwanese traditional food. You can see a lot of places with number "100" on the street in Taiwan and especially at night there are crowds feasting there. The number 100 in the name is not an accident here - it’s the price of most of the dishes on the menu - around 100$. Apart from Taiwanese delicacies - such a pig heart, intestines and so on, you can also order typical Japanese meals - such as freshly made sashimi, sushi. It’s worth mentioning that the owner is an eel farmer, so if you love this kind of fish, you will find great quality unagi here!
This is one of the five stories that are coming soon. Feel free to ask any questions you have, feel free to share and tag friends that haven’t been to Tainan… never, or not recently, and need to go there with you and… and…. and make sure you stay tuned because there are more stories coming soon!

Maguro means Tuna, Zuke means to marinate, and Don is short for Donburi which means rice bowl. Marinated fresh Sashimi-grade tuna served on a rice bowl. Quick yet delicious!
You can of course use Salmon, scallop, or any other Sashimi-grade fish instead! Enjoy :)
---------------------------------
Maguro Zuke Don (Marinated Tuna Fish Rice Bowl)
Difficulty: Very Easy
Time: 15min
Number of servings: 1
Ingredients:
90g (3.2oz) Sashimi Grade Yellowfin Ahi Tuna
1/2 tbsp. Sake
1/2 tbsp. Mirin (sweet Sake)
1 tbsp. soy sauce
Wasabi if you like
1 bowl of rice
Kizaminori (shredded Nori sheet)
green onions and/or Shiso leaf
toasted white sesame seeds
Directions:
1. In a small pot, boil down Sake and Mirin to reduce the alcohol content.
2. Add soy sauce and Wasabi, then mix well. (Wasabi will be not spicy if you mix and leave for a while, so kids can eat it with only nice Wasabi aroma.)
3. Marinate tuna Sashimi and put in the fridge for about 10 minutes. (Do not marinate too long or tuna will be salty.)
4. Meanwhile, put rice in a rice bowl and leave to cool. (Cold rice is better because it won't warm up the fish.)
5. Put Kizaminori on the rice, arrange Tuna sashimi, garnish with green onions or Shiso leaves, and sprinkle with toasted white sesame seeds. You can place a bit of fresh Wasabi on top if you like.

JAPANESE SUSHI 101
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_P0jIm43-Cw
Japanese people are usually very surprised and pleased to learn that foreigners actually can eat sushi.
It seems that in Japan most people still don't know how wildly insanely popular sushi is overseas. However, in the Western world there's still a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation about what sushi actually is.
For example, I'm sure that many of you have had this conversation before.
Hey, do you wanna go have some sushi?
Sushi? What's that?
Umm. You know, it's like raw fish?
This is actually not true. It's a common misconception that sushi equals raw fish. But actually sushi refers to the way that the rice is prepared. The rice is vinegared and that's what makes it such a perfect match with raw fish. Don't be mistaken. Not all sushi is raw fish and not all raw fish is sushi.
So today I bought all kinds of Japanese sushi and even some things that are not sushi, and I'd like to explain the difference to you today.
First, usually in Japan when we talk about eating sushi or getting sushi, we don't mean the rolls. It's actually much more common to eat nigiri sushi which is the vinegared rice on the bottom and the "neta" the fish on the top.
We've got shrimp. We've got egg. We've got anago. We've got salmon. We've got everything.
That isn't to say that rolls don't exist at all in Japan, but there definitely isn't quite the variety that you will find overseas.
This is called a salad roll. It has egg, imitation crab, some tuna and a cucumber. It's no Philadelphia or caterpillar roll, but in terms of complicated rolled sushi, this is about as good as it's gonna get.
My favorite type of Japanese rolled sushi is Tekka Maki which is just tuna. I love how this side is super clean and then on this side you can see all the fish coming out.
However, this is sashimi. Sashimi is not sushi. Sashimi is usually raw slices of fish placed on top of daikon, meaning there's no rice involved and therefore it is not sushi.
