☆ネイティブの生の会話からリアルな英語を学ぶ☆
=================================
1) Either way(どちらにしても〜だ)
=================================
eitherは「二つのうちどちらか一方」を意味することから、either wayは「どっちでも〜だ」や「どちらにせよ〜だ」を意味します。「どっちでもいいよ」は“I’m fine either way. ”、「どちらにせよ、それは重要ではない」は“Either way, it’s not important. ”という具合に使われます。ちなみに、今日の会話で使われた“It could go either way.”は「どちらに転んでもおかしくない」を意味します。
<例文>
I’m fine either way. I don’t have a preference.
(どっちでもいいよ。特に好みはないから。)
Either way, it’s expensive. Let’s just fly there.
(どちらにしても高いから飛行機で行こう。)
I have no idea who’s going to win tonight. It could go either way.
(今夜は誰が勝つか全然分からない。どっちが勝ってもおかしくないよ。)
=================================
2) Much the same(ほぼ同じ)
=================================
much the sameは「ほとんど同じ」や「大差がない」を意味する表現で、almost the sameと同じ意味合いになります。「私もほぼ同じです」は“I’m much the same.”といいますが、ネイティブはよく“I’m pretty much the same.”と表現します。ちなみに、「全く同じである」はvery much the sameと言います。
<例文>
I’m much the same. I hardly ever eat fast food.
(私も似たようなものです。ファストフードはほとんど食べません。)
My schedule is pretty much the same as yours.
(私のスケジュールはあなたとほぼ同じです。)
We have very much the same personality.
(私たちは性格が全く同じですね。)
=================================
3) Nothing like(〜とは全然違う)
=================================
nothing likeはvery different fromと似た意味合いになり、二つのものや人が全く異なることを意味します。例えば、「発音が全然違うよ」は“It sounds nothing like that.”、「彼は全然私に似ていません」は“He looks nothing like me.”という具合に使います。ちなみに、“There is nothing like ____.”は「〜に勝るものはない」を意味し、「〜は最高だ」と表現する時に使われる口語的な言い回しです。日常会話では、there isを省いて“Nothing like ____.”と言うこともあります。
<例文>
You look nothing like your older brother. Are you guys really siblings?
(全然お兄さんに似ていないね。本当に兄弟なの?)
Tokyo is nothing like LA. It’s a completely different kind of vibe out there.
(東京はロスとは全然違うよ。雰囲気が全く違う。)
Nothing like an ice cold beer on a hot summer day.
(夏の暑い日には、冷たいビールが最高だ。)
=================================
4) Pretentious(気取った)
=================================
pretentiousは「気取った」や「偉ぶった」を意味する単語です。これはpretend(〜のふりをする)に由来する言葉で、見栄を張っている人や偉そうな態度を取っている人、まるで知識があるかのように振る舞おうとする人に対して使われます。
<例文>
Don’t say things like that. It makes you sound pretentious.
(そういうこと言わない。偉そうに聞こえるよ。)
I thought he came off a bit pretentious.
(彼はちょっとお高くとまった感じの人だと思いました。)
I don’t mean to sound pretentious, but the proper pronunciation is karaoke.
(気取っているわけではありませんが、正しい発音は「カラオケ」です。)
=================================
5) Force(強制する)
=================================
forceが名詞で使われる場合は「力」や「エネルギー」を意味しますが、動詞として使う場合は「〜を強制する」や「無理やり〜する」を意味します。残業を強要されたり、人がやりたくないことを無理強いするような状況で使われます。
<例文>
My boss forced me to work last weekend. I didn’t even get paid for it.
(先週末は上司に無理やり働かされました。お給料ももらえませんでした。)
Don’t force the drawer open. You’re going to break it.
(引き出しを無理やり開けないで。壊れちゃうよ。)
I was full, but I forced myself to eat everything.

[kāi guāng diǎn yǎn]
Kai Guang Dian Yan, the consecration ceremony is one of the many Taoist ceremonies. Taoists believe before the consecration ceremony, the statue or picture of the deity would just be the depiction without the essence of the spirit. To invite the spirit of the deity to reside in either the statue or the picture, the consecration ceremony is required.
The consecration ceremony varies depending on the location and the preforming Taoist. Generally speaking, the process of the consecration ceremony would need a virtuous and reputable Taoist to pick the specific date to present the ceremony. During the ceremony, the Taoist would recite special scripture while hold a sacred mirror. Then sun light would be reflected on the sculpture or image with the depiction of the deity. After process, if its a sculpture, the back it would have a hole opened up and inserted with five to seven different sacred objects such as: gold, silver, copper, iron, tin, agate, jade, pearl, bee, centipede and/ or five colored tread. In some instances, depending on the locale where the ceremony is being preformed, written spells or the origin of the said deity written on a piece of red paper would also be inserted into the sculpture. Lastly, the Taoist would then use a hair brush dipped in the blood from a white rooster’s crown mixed with blood from the tongue of a black duck, to annotate the five senses and the body of the sculpture. To “turn on” the ears, nose, eyes body and the thought of the deity now attached to the sculpture. This is called “Liu Tong”, to turn on all six senses.
White rooster signifies life and male vitality. While the pronunciation of duck in mandarin is similar to pressing down so it’s used to press down evil spirits.
The rooster and duck used in the ceremony can not be killed and would be released alive. Nowadays in modern society, when this ceremony is being preformed, cinnabar is used to substitute live animal blood.

Teachers either don’t have the time, resources, permission, or expertise (cultural, literary and general knowledge)Teachers either don’t have the time, resources, permission, or expertise (cultural, literary and general knowledge) to
foster real and two-way interchange among students. They resort to imparting knowledge through lecturing,
to make English lessons interesting, engaging or even exciting.
因為either or只可以跟either A or B,其實喺informal contexts,好多人都會講either A, B, C or D。呢篇文只係一篇listacles,我簡單抒發己見,唔預學生睇,當我要教either or呢個conjunction我當然唔會舉either A, B, C or D咁嘅例子。
就好似both呢個字,傳統想要講Both A & B,如果要講三個或以上items,理論上要講all A, B and C。但現代英文裡面,大家都會講 both A, B and C。
English with Lucy、Papa Teach me、English Like A Native,普通話嘅有阿滴英文等等,呢啲頻道我全部都有睇,佢地當然有佢地嘅作用。但我覺得自己channel嘅價值在於聯繫香港同亞洲文化落英文度,我覺得咁先可以令學生原本唔鍾意英文,變成發現英文同佢地有興趣嘅嘢其實好有關係。
有一句說話係咁講嘅:No one can do what you do, the way you do it。
我成日都講beyond grammar;例如歌詞裡面嘅smile a little smile;Star Trek裡面嘅To boldly go where no one has gone before;蘋果嘅think different;麥當勞嘅I’m loving it,因為我知道rules are made to be broken。
11)Medium
I am not the brightest; I am not the smartest. But I show up for my audience. That's what that matters.

either pronunciation 在 Lindie Botes Youtube 的精選貼文
A question I get asked often - what steps to take when just starting with a language?
———
1. Start with the alphabet if the language has a new writing system. It’s extremely important to get the pronunciation right from the beginning so you don’t have to rely on often inaccurate English renditions of how to pronounce words. Once you have the writing system down, write as much as you can in the language without relying on English or another language to help too much.
2. After the alphabet, learn basic greetings and vocabulary. This is an important step and helps motivate you to keep going. I listen to the radio or to music from that language a lot, and if I learn the 100 most used words in the language, I’ll most likely hear that word in a song and get super excited about it.
3. Grammar. Learn a grammar structure, look at example sentences (either on apps like Duolingo, or textbooks, or sites that give example sentences like conjugator) and then replace words in the sentences with other words you know.
4. Practice. Getting a language partner is important. You should find someone who is open to correcting your mistakes, and someone who is patient to talk to you despite you being a beginner. I also practice by doing everything I normally do, in another language. My diary/schedule/shopping list/music playlist all transforms into my target language for a period of time.
5. Keep track of your progress. A diary, studygram or Youtube channel is a good way to see how you’ve progressed.
