The Philadelphia 76ers never lost track of Vince Carter, but the Toronto Raptors did.
The 76ers held Carter scoreless for the first 10 minutes of the fourth quarter as they rallied for a 104-98 victory over the Raptors in their home opener.
Allen Iverson scored 24 points for Philadelphia, which defeated Toronto for the sixth straight time. But it was fellow guards Eric Snow and Aaron McKie and forward George Lynch who shut down the explosive Carter.
"We got it done and got stops when we needed to," Lynch said. "Everybody wants to see Vince do something spectacular. We're a defensive team and we don't want to see our teammates get embarrassed. We play well together, we help each other out and that's what it's going to take to win. We're not going to let somebody come in and have a big night against us. We just look out for one another."
Carter scored 25 points but just four in the final period, when the Raptors went scoreless for over five minutes. He did not score in the fourth quarter until making a tough drive with 1:45 left that cut the deficit to 93-89.
"Other people were scoring," Carter said. "You have to go the hot man. It's not all about me. It's a team thing."
Toronto never got any closer as Theo Ratliff and Iverson hit baskets and Philadelphia sank 7-of-8 free throws in the final minute to improve to 2-0. The Sixers were 7-of-12 from the line through three quarters and 12-of-16 in the final period.
Carter made his first six shots but was just 3-of-13 thereafter. In the fourth quarter, he was 1-of-6 as the Raptors could not get him untracked, instead going inside to Antonio Davis, who scored nine of his 18 points in the fourth quarter.
"They were in the penalty so that's just smart basketball," Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens said. "They were in the foul trouble and the penalty and Antonio delivered for us. I wanted to go at them and have the other guys be patient."
"The biggest thing right now is trying to understand each other down the stretch," Carter said. "Sometimes, we're trying to think for the other person, and we have a lot of mixups. In due time it will get better."
In addition to slowing down Carter, Snow scored 16 points, McKie added 11 and Lynch grabbed nine rebounds.
Tyrone Hill had 12 points and 10 rebounds and Toni Kukoc scored 11 off the bench for Philadelphia. Mark Jackson had 16 points and 12 assists and Kevin Willis scored 12 points for Toronto.
"I've always said that it's going to be better for the team if we get five of six guys involved," Kukoc said. "We are playing good basketball right now. It's early, but if we continue to play like this, it's going to be good for us."
"It's been a total team effort," Iverson said. "A lot of people have said that we can't win a championship unless I do it by myself. They hear stuff like that and feed off it. No one feels better than me seeing those guys do what they do on the court."
The Raptors cut a six-point deficit to 75-73 entering the fourth quarter and a jump hook by Willis gave them their first lead since the second quarter at 81-79 with 9:20 to play.
But Toronto went scoreless for the next 5:06, missing eight straight shots. Iverson and Hill each had two baskets in a 9-0 spurt that gave Philadelphia an 88-81 lead with 4:35 remaining.
"We had some really good shots and we missed them," Wilkens said. "We just could not make a shot in that one stretch. They were good shots and the ball just didn't go down for us."
Davis made three jumpers around two free throws by Iverson to pull Toronto within 90-87 with 2:57 left. But McKie answered with a three-point play 50 seconds later before Carter finally scored.
The Sixers shot 48 percent (41-of-85) and limited Toronto to 45 percent (39-of-86). They blocked 10 shots, five by center Theo Ratliff.
Carter came out on fire, scoring 15 points on 6-of-6 shooting in the first quarter. His 3-pointer gave Toronto a 31-21 lead late in the period.
Trailing 43-36, the Sixers went on a 16-2 burst that featured points from six players, including three from Nazr Mohammed. The reserve center played only in garbage time in Tuesday's 101-72 win at New York.
Snow's basket made it 52-45 with 2:16 left and Philadelphia held a 59-53 advantage at halftime.
"It was hard to keep the focus," Iverson said. "We went down a little bit, then we brought ourselves back up and were able to win the game. That's the most important thing, regardless of how sloppy the game was."

The Philadelphia 76ers are tired after playing six games in eight days. Thanks to Allen Iverson, they had more than enough energy to beat the Memphis Grizzlies.
Iverson scored 33 points as Philadelphia beat Memphis 95-88 Wednesday night, keeping the Grizzlies the NBA's only winless team with their 12th straight loss.
Philadelphia coach Larry Brown wasn't worried about becoming the
first team to lose to the Grizzlies this season.
"I was really impressed with them. I knew it would be a hard game,'' he said. "I just wanted to figure out a way we could hang on. We had some tired guys out there. Allen stepped up, and we had some tremendous defensive stops, and we got a win.''
The 76ers won for only the second time in six road games this
season and got a measure of revenge against Memphis, which swept
last season's two-game series. They lead the all-time series 11-3.
Todd MacCulloch had 15 points and 13 rebounds for Philadelphia.
Eric Snow added 14 points, Aaron McKie 12 and Keith Van Horn 10.
Stromile Swift set a Memphis record by blocking eight shots, and he also had 12 points and 16 rebounds. Rookie Drew Gooden led the Grizzlies with 21 points, Pau Gasol had 14 and Wesley Person added 12 off the bench.
Van Horn called it an ugly game but said the 76ers felt
fortunate to pull out a victory against a team desperate to win. He
said they didn't want to be the first club to lose to Memphis.
"It's definitely on your mind. It's almost like a fear not to be the first to lose,'' he said.
Philadelphia trailed only once, 24-22 in the first quarter, before Brian Skinner hit a pair of free throws and a layup for the lead. The 76ers led by as much as 13 twice, the last time at 54-41 on MacCulloch's layup off an assist by Iverson just before halftime.
The Grizzlies, playing their fourth game in six days and hoping
to give new coach Hubie Brown a victory, pulled to 67-63 when Earl
Watson capped an 8-0 run with a jumper with 1:54 left in the third.
But Iverson, scoreless in the quarter until then, answered with
a pair of 3-pointers. McKie added a jumper for a 75-63 lead after
three.
Gooden scored with 43.4 seconds left to pull the Grizzlies to
92-86, but that was as close as they would get.
Hubie Brown pointed out that he and his assistant coaches have been with the Grizzlies only eight days, playing three of four games against teams that went to the playoffs last season. He is using these games to evaluate his players.
"Are we happy tonight? Absolutely not. We're not happy at all,'' Hubie Brown said. "Give Iverson his due. He made two spectacular shots. I thought he had a rifle instead of his hand. It was just great, great pressure shots.''
Iverson started slowly after scoring a season-high 38 points Tuesday night in a loss to New Orleans. He missed five of his first six shots, turned the ball over three times and had just three points in the first quarter.
The 76ers opened the game with a 9-2 run, but Gooden scored six
points to help the Grizzlies rally. Mike Batiste's layup gave them
a two-point lead late in the first.
Then Iverson warmed up, scoring 13 in the second quarter as he
went 7-of-8 at the free-throw line.
Memphis seemed sluggish after losing 110-106 in overtime at Minnesota on Tuesday night. The Grizzlies shot just 6-of-24 from the floor in the second quarter and finished shooting 39 percent (33-of-84).
Game notes
Swift had seven blocks in the first half. The team record for blocks had been shared by Gasol, who had seven twice last season as a rookie, and Bryant Reeves. ... Derrick Coleman, in just his second game this season, had just one point in 14 minutes for Philadelphia. ... Memphis guard Jason Williams sprained his left foot with 4 minutes left as he landed on Eric Snow's foot after tossing up a 3-point attempt. Williams walked off the court on his
own, but had to be helped to the locker room. X-rays were planned for Thursday.

The Denver Nuggets have been here before, and this time around, they're not going to get too excited about it.
In 2005 the Nuggets beat the Spurs in Game 1 of the first round of the playoffs on the road before losing the next four to a San Antonio team that went on to win the NBA championship.
The Nuggets did it again Sunday night, beating the Spurs 95-89 in the first game of their Western Conference playoff series with Allen Iverson and Carmelo Anthony leading the way.
"The guys who were here two years ago know we were in the same situation last time," Denver center Marcus Camby said. "They ran off and won four straight. That's why no one is really happy. We came out to get Game 1 but we also want to get Game 2."
If Iverson and Anthony play this well again, the Nuggets have a good shot. Anthony scored 30 points and Iverson added 31, including 29 after a sluggish first quarter.
"Two years ago we probably were just happy to be in the playoffs," Anthony said. "Now we ain't just happy to be in the playoffs. We know we're a good team and when we play good we can play with the best of them."
And the Nuggets played tough defense, too, which is not usually their forte.
"They stopped us, doing the things we wanted to do and we couldn't stop their two stars," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "That's really the bottom line. Their defense outplayed us."
Nene added 13 points and 12 rebounds and Marcus Camby grabbed 10 boards for sixth-seeded Denver, which entered the playoffs having won 10 of 11. The big guys also made things difficult for Tim Duncan, who scored 14 points and had 10 rebounds for the Spurs.
Tony Parker led third-seeded San Antonio with 19 points, followed by Michael Finley with 15 and Robert Horry with 14.
The Spurs' Manu Ginobili isn't putting much stock in the 2005 series, either.
"I still hate it. It's not that I'm going to get confident because I've done it before," he said. "We are very upset. We really wanted to take this one home and we didn't."
Game 2 is Wednesday in San Antonio.
"So now we really got to step up. Now we know we have to go to Denver and take one or two games," said Ginobili, who then added, not wanting to get ahead of himself: "First of all we have to focus on the next one because it's going to be a huge one for us."
Denver traded for Iverson in December, hoping the former MVP would combine with Anthony to form an unstoppable 1-2 punch and make the Nuggets a legitimate title contender. The two averaged 55 points a game, but not until late in the season did Denver start to win consistently.
"It was important to come out and play defense," Iverson said. "We understand that we can score points, we've been saying that all year long. We can score points, that's not our problem. We've got to be able to stop people. When we needed the stops, we got it."
The Spurs won the season series with Denver, 2-1, but that was hardly a good gauge of how this series would go. The Nuggets were without Anthony in the first matchup and Iverson had just returned from an injury for the second. Their third meeting was the last regular season game and Denver won a meaningless 100-77 rout.
With their stars now aligned, the Nuggets got the road victory they'll need to pull off the upset and win their first playoff series since 1994 -- when they beat Seattle in a best-of-five to become the first No. 8 seed to knock out a No. 1.
Nene's dunk off a pass from the driving Iverson made it 80-77. Anthony's 3 and a basket by Iverson were followed by another Iverson-to-Nene combination to close an 11-0 Denver run and give the Nuggets a 10-point lead -- their biggest of the game -- with 3:27 left.
After Denver failed to get the ball over the half court line in time with under a minute to play, Parker hit a layup for the Spurs to bring them within 91-87 with 43.9 left.
Iverson missed his next shot, and Parker's under the basket pass to Duncan for a dunk made it 91-89 Nuggets with 17.9 to go.
But Anthony and Nene hit two free throws a piece after each was fouled by Duncan to extend the lead to 95-89 with 11.6 seconds left and seal the game for the Nuggets.
The Nuggets had the lead for most of the first half as Duncan, Parker and Ginobili struggled from the field. They combined for 15 points and shot 7-of-33 from the field in the first half, one fewer than Anthony scored for Denver as he went 7-of-9. Iverson missed his first six shots, then hit four straight.
It was Finley who kept the Spurs within striking distance of Denver. He hit two of the Spurs' first-half 3 pointers.
Anthony's fast-break dunk off a long pass from Camby with 4.9 seconds on the clock gave Denver a 44-42 lead heading into the third quarter.
Iverson's 11 points in the third, including a 3 with 2:39 left in the quarter, gave the Nuggets a slight edge going into the fourth.
