▋設定一個簡單的目標
大學畢業後,一方面工作,一方面也想持續學習,想當然爾,英文就是首個需要被提升的目標。
我一開始也沒想很多,就給自己一個目標:
#每天都要碰英文
就是一個簡單的目標,不管時間長或短,只要有碰就好。
如果工作忙一點,就少碰一點,反正有碰就好,不管是看個英文小短片、或是讀一篇短篇新聞,只要有碰我就是達成了,甚至聽英文歌都行。
如果閒暇時間比較多,就看電影或是長一點的文章,總之,我希望把英文融入到我的生活當中。
持續一段時間之後,口說的能力也是很重要的,要講話就必須找到對象,對於長時間工作的在職人士來說,去實體補習班我覺得很沒有效率,想到通勤我就覺得很麻煩,通勤的時間我不如省下來多接觸英文,我最後選了線上的英文學習網站,持續了好一段時間。
在《恆毅力》這本書提到「專家的刻意練習,讓他們從自覺不足到游刃有餘」。
我們想把一件能力變得更好,要花一萬小時的刻意練習。
10年1萬小時,相當於1年1,000小時。分到每一天,10年1萬小時,相當於每天要花2.7小時。
如果每天都安排練習,則是每天都必須練習2.7個小時,也是每天都必須練習164分鐘。
說實在的,對於在職的人來說,每天2.7小時真的蠻多的,但我覺得我只要朝這方向努力,總有一天會達到的,我只要一直用,持續進步就行了。
▋讓英文變成自己學習的工具
我沒有希望一定要把英文檢定考到多少分,我也不是為了培訓機師而準備英文,相反的,希望我能夠透過英文學到許多中文學不到的東西。
例如看影片、看專訪,許多第一手原文資料如果我能夠越快、越輕鬆看得懂、吸收,我的學習效率就更高。
就好比聽John Bogle的專訪─ A Motley Fool Special Interview
這些指數化投資的資料等翻譯成中文不知道要等到天荒地老,靠自己最實在,如果可以聽得懂Bogle的意思,我認為實在是一種很棒的學習體驗。
▋不要說自己沒時間
TED上有個關於時間管理的影片─How to gain control of your free time,我想是對於「沒有時間」這問題非常好的解答。
影片傳達「時間管理」不是單純不去做什麼、剩下去做什麼的問題,而是優先性的問題。
Laura Vanderkam在影片中說到:
一、我們不是透過節省時間來營造想過的生活,相反的,我們是先營造自己追求的生活,然後時間自然而然就會出現。
We don't build the lives we want by saving time. We build the lives we want, and then time saves itself.
二、時間管理的關鍵是,把我們首先要做的事當成處理故障的熱水器一般。
The key to time management is treating our priorities as the equivalent of that broken water heater.
三、時間是高度變通的。我們無法平白無故生出更多的時間,但如果方法正確,時間會自行調適,讓我們去做我們想做的事情。
Time is highly elastic. We cannot make more time, but time will stretch to accommodate what we choose to put into it.
時間是有限的資源,就像是金錢同樣有稀缺的問題存在,這時候「資產配置」就相當重要了,把空閒時間配置到哪一種娛樂上,是(時間)資產擁有者的選擇。
我覺得不是有沒有時間去做,而是想不想做。
如果很想做一件事情,自然會把這件事情的優先性提高,就像修熱水器一樣。
想做,自然會有時間,就像Laura Vanderkam最後所說的,打造自己想要的生活,時間自然來。
There is time.
Even if we are busy, we have time for what matters.
And when we focus on what matters, we can build the lives we want in the time we've got.
