After the long Chinese New Year holiday, everyone supposes to go back to office today in which you should see lion dancing everywhere to welcome them.
Shops and companies hang lettuce at the entrance on their first day of work in the new year to welcome the Lion, which is believed to bring good luck and fortune to the business. Lettuce, in chinese 生菜 (san choi), has a similar pronunciation as 生財 (sun choi), which means growing wealth and prosperity. The lion will eat the lettuce and throw it into the shop, which the storekeepers will catch the lettuce (luck and wealth).
The atmosphere on the first working day should be a lot different this year. Civil servants (except those who provide urgent and necessary public services) and many other private sector employees will work from home until Feb 2 as a preventive measure to minimise the spread of Wuhan Coronavirus.
Stay healthy everyone! May the lion also bring us good health!

Chinese New Year Taboos
Chinese New Year is the most important holiday for Chinese culture. The holiday is longer and the list of taboos is quite long too. How much do you know about these taboos? The most common one is not on third day of new year not to visit friends and relatives. Supposedly this is the day you are more likely get to into arguments. Or there is the one where you cannot say unlucky things such as death, sick, lose during the new years. But there are many more that younger people might just have question marks around.
Do not wash your hair on first day of new year
In Chinese the words hair and rich have the same pronunciation so there is saying that washing your hair will wash away your wealth luck. Some families enforce the rule that you cannot wash your hair on the first day as the words wash and death also sound similar to each other.
Reality: how can you I go out with my messy hair that is not washed?
Do not sweep the floor or throw away trash on first day of new year
The traditional belief is that sweeping and throwing your trash away will remove all your luck and send away the god of wealth too. So the cleaning has to happen the night before or the day after.
Reality: Use a vaccum to clean the floor so you do not need to sweep
